Rockaby/Berceuse - Footfalls

"More!" This word sets the play Rockaby going, as a rocking-chair moves by itself to the hypnotic rhythm of a voice. It is spoken by a seated woman in black, who may be mother, or daughter, or both. The sense of mystery is thick: we strain to catch every word. In Beckett's French translation, Berceuse, every word is different, but the echoes intensify. Beckett underlined the ambiguous situations in his plays by repetition, drawing audiences ever deeper into a character's predicament.

The third performance of the evening is an experimental staging of Footfalls emphasising the ghostliness and uncanny doubling of another mother/daughter relationship. In this production one actor plays both roles-the daughter and her unseen mother. A shadow passes across a lighted strip of stage and a woman's dragging footsteps are heard, as we eavesdrop on a conversation between mother and daughter that reflects our own perturbation, too: "Will you never have done... revolving it all?  In your poor mind?"

After the show there is an opportunity to meet the actor, when ROSEMARY POUNTNEY, who once worked on Footfalls with Beckett himself, comes back onstage to take questions from the audience, and discuss Beckett's plays in performance. Pountney has toured these plays across the world as a professional actress. She has also taught Beckett's drama as a Lecturer in English at the University of Oxford, where she is an Honorary Fellow of St Anne's College. Her book, Theatre of Shadows, analysed Beckett's plays from their genesis in manuscript and linguistic patterning to their concrete shape in the theatre.
